Background
Victor Basta is Managing Partner at Artis Partners, a technology investment bank launched in late 2024 / early 2025 to advise US and European growth-stage technology companies on strategic sell-side M&A and larger growth financings. Artis says its work centers on exit preparation and transaction execution for B2B AI/SaaS, fintech, deeptech, and healthcare technology companies.
Before Artis, Basta led DAI Magister’s advisory efforts worldwide. DAI announced in November 2020 that it had taken a majority investment in Magister Advisors to create DAI Magister, and said Basta, who founded Magister Advisors in 2012, would continue as CEO and Chairman of DAI Magister. In December 2024, Basta wrote that he was leaving DAI Magister to help build Artis Partners after DAI chose to focus on emerging and frontier markets.
Earlier in his career, Basta founded and was managing partner of Arma Partners LLP, served as global co-head of Broadview before its sale to Jefferies, and taught exit preparation and large funding rounds as an Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship at INSEAD. Artis says he has advised on more than 130 transactions across a 30-year career. He received an MBA from Columbia Business School and a combined master’s and BA in International Affairs from Columbia University.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Artis is not a venture fund in the usual sense; Basta’s verified role is as an investment banker and advisor, not a seed-stage angel investor. His focus is sell-side M&A, growth financings, and fund-level exit strategy.
- Artis’s core thesis is that growth companies should prepare early to be “bought, not sold,” using a two-stage process: 6–18 or 12–24 months of exit preparation before a formal M&A process.
- For exits, Artis prioritizes strategic buyers over rushed sale processes, arguing that buyer familiarity, repeated market education, and early relationship-building can improve both valuation and closing certainty.
- In AI, Basta argues that companies able to show real AI-driven value creation, margin expansion, and strategic relevance to large acquirers are better positioned for high-value exits.
- Artis focuses on B2B AI/SaaS, fintech, deeptech, and healthcare technology across Europe and the US; DAI Magister’s predecessor activity also included fintech, climate tech, and digital-economy transactions in Africa/MENA and emerging markets.
- Artis has described its target AI advisees as Series C and Series D companies raising significant capital, no longer startups, and still growing roughly 50% to 100% annually.
