Background
Vivek Ramaswamy was born August 9, 1985, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Indian immigrant parents. He graduated *summa cum laude* with a bachelor's in biology from Harvard University in 2007 and earned a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 2013, where he was a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellow for New Americans. Early in his career he co-founded Campus Venture Network (2007–2009), which was sold to the Kauffman Foundation, and spent roughly seven years as a partner at the hedge fund QVT Financial, where he ran a biotech-focused portfolio and traded pre-commercial biopharma stocks.
In 2014 he founded Roivant Sciences, a biopharmaceutical company built on the model of licensing shelved or undervalued drug candidates and developing them through a network of "Vant" subsidiaries. Under his leadership Roivant led some of the largest biotech IPOs of 2015–2016. He stepped back from the CEO role in early 2021 as the company went public via SPAC. Roivant has since advanced multiple assets, including positive late-stage results for brepocitinib in 2025.
In early 2022 Ramaswamy co-founded Strive Asset Management with high-school friend Anson Frericks, positioning the firm as an "anti-ESG" / "excellence over politics" investment house. Strive's launch drew backing from investors including Peter Thiel, Bill Ackman, and J.D. Vance; its flagship U.S. energy ETF (DRLL) crossed $1 billion in assets, and the broader firm has grown toward roughly $1.7 billion in assets while pivoting toward wealth management.
Since 2023 Ramaswamy has become a prominent political figure — a 2024 Republican presidential candidate, briefly a co-lead of the proposed "Department of Government Efficiency," and, as of 2025–2026, the Trump-endorsed Republican candidate for Governor of Ohio in the 2026 election. Forbes estimated his net worth at roughly $1–3 billion.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Operates primarily as a founder-operator and public-markets investor rather than a full-time venture angel; startup angel activity is opportunistic and personal.
- Historical angel/early-stage checks have skewed toward biotech and healthcare enterprise software, reflecting his QVT and Roivant background, with some consumer/social software exposure.
- Through Strive, his stated public-markets thesis is to invest in companies pursuing "excellence" and shareholder value over ESG/political mandates — "post-partisan" capitalism focused on returns.
- Values contrarian, mission-driven bets and companies willing to challenge prevailing consensus in their industry.
Notable Investments
- Roivant Sciences — Founder; biopharma "hub-and-spoke" drug developer (Dermavant, Immunovant, and other Vants); NASDAQ: ROIV.
- Strive Asset Management / Strive ETFs (e.g., DRLL) — Co-founder; anti-ESG asset manager that surpassed $1B AUM in its energy ETF.
