Background

Vivian Prem Watsa was born August 5, 1950, in Hyderabad, India. He earned a chemical-engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras before emigrating to Canada in 1972, where he completed an MBA at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. He began his investment career at Confederation Life in the 1970s and early 1980s, later moving to GW Asset Management, before co-founding Hamblin Watsa Investment Counsel in 1984 with his former boss, Tony Hamblin.

In 1985 Watsa acquired Markel Financial, a small, near-bankrupt Canadian trucking-insurance company, and rebranded it Fairfax Financial Holdings. Over four decades he built it into one of the world's larger property-and-casualty insurance and investment groups, using insurance "float" to fund a value-oriented, contrarian investment program. Fairfax reported record net earnings of roughly US$4.8 billion in 2025, and book value per basic share was about US$1,250 as of March 31, 2026. His self-imposed CEO salary remains a flat US$600,000 with no bonus or equity incentives — his upside comes from being a major Fairfax shareholder.

Frequently dubbed "Canada's Warren Buffett," Watsa is known for patient, long-horizon capital allocation and blunt macro warnings (including a 2017 caution about a Toronto real-estate bubble). He also founded Fairfax India Holdings Corporation to invest in Indian public and private companies, and is associated with Helios Fairfax Partners (Africa) and Hamblin Watsa.

Beyond investing, Watsa served as the 9th Chancellor of the University of Waterloo (2009–2014) and first Chancellor of Huron University College (2017), and co-founded the BlackNorth Initiative to address anti-Black systemic racism. He was named a Member of the Order of Canada (2015), received India's Padma Shri (2020), was inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame (2024), and named a 2024 Insurance Hall of Fame laureate.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Long-term value and contrarianism: Buys quality or turnaround businesses when they are out of favor and holds for years; explicitly modeled on Warren Buffett's insurance-float-to-investments approach.
  • Downside protection first: Famous for buying credit default swaps and equity hedges starting in ~2003 to protect Fairfax's balance sheet against a market collapse — a bet that paid off enormously in 2007–2008.
  • Concentrated, sizeable positions: Willing to take large minority or controlling stakes rather than spraying small checks (Bank of Ireland, BlackBerry, Fairfax India portfolio companies).
  • Distressed financials & special situations: Repeatedly stepped into troubled banks and insurers at moments of crisis to recapitalize them for gain.
  • Geographic conviction bets: Created dedicated vehicles (Fairfax India, Helios Fairfax) to express structural conviction in India and Africa.
  • Alignment through ownership: Takes minimal cash compensation and holds Fairfax stock, signaling a shareholder-first, skin-in-the-game philosophy.

Notable Investments

  • Credit default swaps (2003–2008): Contrarian hedges against financial institutions generated roughly US$2 billion+ in gains during the 2008 crisis; ~US$3.22B notional CDS sold in Q3 2008 alone for ~US$574.5M cash proceeds.
  • Bank of Ireland (2011): Led a consortium (with Wilbur Ross) that took a ~34.9% stake for about €1.1B, helping avert nationalization; Fairfax later booked a gain of roughly €566M / CAD$806M.
  • BlackBerry / Research In Motion (2013): Fairfax became BlackBerry's largest shareholder and led a US$4.7B take-private offer; the deal ultimately converted into a large convertible-debenture position rather than an outright buyout. Watsa sat on the RIM/BlackBerry board.
  • Fairfax India Holdings: Founder and director of the publicly traded vehicle investing across Indian public and private companies (e.g., Bangalore International Airport, IIFL group).
  • Recent public-equity holdings (per Q1 2026 13F): Orla Mining (~26%), Under Armour (Class A + C), CVS Health (~10%), and Kennedy-Wilson Holdings among the largest positions.
