Wayne Chang

Wayne Chang (born August 3, 1983, in Taipei, Taiwan) immigrated to the U.S. as a child and grew up in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He wrote his first program on an Apple IIe at age 7 and, while a student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, built i2hub in his dorm in 2003 — a peer-to-peer file-sharing network that spread across 400+ universities before he left school to pursue startups. UMass Amherst later awarded him an honorary doctorate and selected him as its 2016 commencement speaker (his address was titled "Hack the System").

Chang's defining company was Crashlytics, a mobile crash-reporting startup he co-founded with Jeff Seibert in 2011. Twitter acquired it in January 2013 in what was then Twitter's largest acquisition, and Chang went on to help build and lead Fabric, Twitter's mobile developer platform, which scaled to roughly 2 billion active devices and ~225,000 developers before the Crashlytics/Fabric technology was acquired by Google (Crashlytics is now a default part of Android/Firebase).

In 2018 Chang again teamed with Seibert to co-found Digits, an applied-AI company building real-time financial technology for businesses. Digits raised a $10.5M Series A (Benchmark, 2019), a $22M Series B (GV and Benchmark, 2020), and a $65M Series C led by SoftBank in March 2022, reaching a valuation reported around $600M. He has since launched additional AI ventures — Patented.ai (litigation/IP technology) and Reasoner, a neuro-symbolic "reasoning engine" aimed at reducing hallucinations and improving explainability for high-precision applications.

Beyond operating companies, Chang has been a prolific angel and mentor (a Techstars mentor since 2011, and an advisor to MassChallenge and others), has produced films including *Dear Dictator* and the Sundance-winning documentary *Chasing Coral*, and has been recognized on Boston Business Journal's 40 Under 40 and named among Forbes' top angel investors.

• Signal over diligence: Chang and Jeff Seibert invest as a pair and famously "make investment decisions after the first call (~30 mins)." Because they don't run formal diligence, they rely on trusted signal and do not accept cold outreach.
• Stage: Concentrated at pre-seed and seed, where a founder's track record and conviction matter most; he has also joined later rounds (Series A/B) selectively.
• Check size: Typically small angel checks (~$25K–$50K per some sources, up to ~$100K–$500K on larger deals). He is not a lead investor.
• Sectors: AI/generative tech, developer tools, cloud/data infrastructure, fintech, enterprise SaaS, consumer, and legal tech — reflecting his own operating background in developer platforms and applied AI.
• Founder-operator lens: He markets himself as a founder-operator and "angel advisor," bringing hands-on scaling experience (Crashlytics/Fabric to billions of devices; Digits fundraising) rather than a fund's process.
