Background

Wayne Tamarelli (born August 13, 1941) built a four-decade operating career before becoming a full-time angel investor. He earned BS, MS, and PhD degrees in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University — where he was also an NSF Fellow and a professor — and an MBA in marketing and international business from New York University. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and early in his career worked at Exxon (Project Leader, New Ventures) and rose to Senior Vice President at Engelhard Corporation (1970–1983), where he had responsibility for over $1 billion in annual revenues, roughly 2,000 people, and affiliated companies across the Americas, Europe, and the Far East.

In 1983 he acquired Dock Resins Corporation in a leveraged buyout and ran it as sole owner, Chairman, and CEO for roughly 19 years (1983–2002), focusing on specialty and advanced polymeric materials and surface-applied polymers for industrial markets. After growing its revenues and profits substantially, he sold the company at a premium. He also held a Senior Vice President and advisory role at Landec Corporation (1997–2002).

Around 2000 he shifted primarily to investing, founding AWT Private Investments as a private angel venture-capital firm. In 2002 he co-founded and became founding board chair of the Jumpstart New Jersey Angel Network, one of the state's most active angel groups, and served on its board across its ~20-year history. He was also a member of the Band of Angels in Silicon Valley. By his own account he made well over 100 investments in roughly 50 companies since 2000, frequently taking board seats. He was an emeritus member and Management Award recipient of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, past chairman of the Chemistry Council of New Jersey and SOCMA, and a founding past chair at the Science History Institute.

Beyond technology, Tamarelli was an accomplished violinist, a member of the Explorers Club, a traveler to 179+ countries, and a wine investor who owned Tamarelli Vineyards in Mendoza, Argentina, with additional viticulture interests in Sonoma, Italy, Spain, and France. He died in Basking Ridge, NJ on December 4, 2023.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Backed seed, startup, and early-stage ventures — usually R&D/science-based — via equity investments and convertible loans, positioning himself as a value-added investor who could serve as an active business advisor and take a board seat "when appropriate."
  • Summed up the firm's screen as "GROWTH, PROFITS, and EXCITEMENT," looking for a working prototype, IP protection, a strong management team, and a credible path to a profitable exit.
  • Prized management quality and mission alignment above all: he emphasized understanding the team and the company's mission before committing.
  • Believed in leading rounds, keeping "dry powder" for follow-on support, and syndicating with other angels — noting that a portfolio requires many mediocre outcomes to reach the home runs. In his words: "Lemons ripen in about two years; plums take about seven."
  • On the role of angels: "Angels invest where institutional VC funds and banks fear to tread." He also cited non-adoption (customers not prioritizing the product) as a startup's biggest competitive threat.
  • Required geographic proximity — deals near Basking Ridge, NJ or Sand Hill Road, Palo Alto — reflecting his hands-on, board-level style.
