Background
Dr. Wei-Wu He is the founder and General Partner of Emerging Technology Partners, LLC (ETP), a life-sciences-focused venture fund he established in 2000. Over his career he has been involved in founding or funding a large number of biotech companies — figures cited across sources range from "over 20" in earlier accounts to "over 60" and even "over 100" more recently — many of which were subsequently acquired or taken public. He has served on numerous biotech company boards and is recognized as a prominent biotechnology investor.
He began his career as a scientist, joining Human Genome Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: HGSI) as one of its first few employees in the early-to-mid 1990s. Before that he was a research fellow conducting cancer research at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Mayo Clinic. He co-founded and served as CEO/President of OriGene Technologies, Inc., which he built into a profitable life-science tools company that later merged with a publicly traded Chinese company. He has authored more than 30–50 peer-reviewed publications and holds over 30 issued U.S. patents in molecular biology.
Dr. He holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology from Baylor College of Medicine and an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In 2006 he was named a Senior Smith Fellow at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, supporting the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship. He has also served as a Venture Partner of IDG/Accel Partners' China fund.
Today, alongside running ETP, he holds several operating leadership roles: he has been Executive Chairman of Human Longevity, Inc. since July 2019, and serves as Chairman and CEO of CASI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He is also Chairman of OriGene, Juventa, and Sophonix, and founder of Genetron Health.
