Wells Whitney

Wells Whitney was born in 1933 (New York City / Boston) and built a long career as a research scientist before turning to startup investing late in life. He earned a BA from Harvard College and both an MS and an Sc.D. from MIT in materials science / engineering, and completed postdoctoral research in Strasbourg, France. His early industrial career included research and product-development roles at Monsanto, Celanese, and Reprographic Materials.

In the early 1970s he moved to the Bay Area and spent roughly 25 years at Raychem in Menlo Park, working in research, product development, and exploratory marketing — including a three-year posting in Tokyo. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, served as a Trustee of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, developed a deep interest in gerontology and longevity, and lectured widely on healthy aging while leading men's groups on the subject.
