Background
Will Cardwell is an American-born, Finland-based venture investor, educator, and ecosystem builder. He earned an MBA from Aalto University in Finland and completed roughly three years of Ph.D. studies in finance at the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School before moving into finance and entrepreneurship full-time. He began his career in investment banking but gravitated toward the seed and pre-seed stage, later running the software company Valimo Wireless and a chain of business incubators.
In 2010, when three Finnish universities merged to form Aalto University, Cardwell was hired to establish its entrepreneurship centre — work widely credited with helping launch the Aalto Ventures Program (Aalto's entrepreneurship minor) and, more broadly, strengthening the Finnish startup ecosystem. He left Aalto in 2013 to build his own venture firm and advisory under the Courage Ventures brand, focused on very early-stage startups, mainly in Finland and the wider Nordic-Baltic region. He also co-founded xEdu, an education-technology accelerator in Finland.
By his own accounting, since 1999 Cardwell has been a leader or active team member on fundraising for 34 seed and growth-stage companies that collectively raised over €187 million (about €5 million each on average), acting variously as board member/shareholder (19 cases), advisor/investment banker (7 cases), or university tech-transfer signatory (8 cases). He has been an equity partner in four VC management companies totalling €239 million.
Alongside investing, Cardwell is a Senior Lecturer at Aalto University Executive Education and the Aalto School of Science, and an Adjunct Professor of Finance and Entrepreneurship at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, where he teaches entrepreneurship, venture capital, and angel investing across Europe, Africa, and the United States. He is also a partner at Open Circle Capital in Lithuania.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Stated mission: "Bringing Nordic Digital Health Innovation to the World" — backing early-stage digital-health startups from ecosystems with strong technical and clinical depth and helping them scale into the US market.
- Stage: Pre-seed and seed; he has said he explicitly prefers the seed/pre-seed stage over later-stage banking work.
- Sectors: Digital health is the current core thesis; historically Courage has also invested across education/edtech and environment/impact ("health, education and environment verticals where its partners and advisors can add significant value").
- Geography: Deal flow sourced through Nordic and Baltic networks; the US is the intended growth and exit market.
- What makes him say yes: Strong regional ecosystem support, ESG/sustainability-aligned selection criteria, and companies where he and his partners/advisors can add hands-on value (he frequently takes board chair/board roles).
- Style: Hands-on and operator-like — he often serves as Executive Chairman, Chairman, or board advisor to portfolio companies rather than a passive check-writer.
