Background

Willem Brunia is a Partner and the Chief Financial Officer of Capital A Investment Partners, an independent mid-market private equity firm headquartered in Amsterdam. Before entering private equity, he held several financial positions at a number of insurers and at a bank. In 2009 he joined ABN AMRO's private equity arm (ABN AMRO Participaties), the mid-market investment team that had operated within ABN AMRO since 1982.

When ABN AMRO's participation team continued independently under the name Capital A in 2018, Brunia moved with it and took on the role of Partner and CFO. As CFO he is responsible for all middle- and back-office activities of the firm — fund finance, administration, reporting, compliance oversight and operations — rather than for originating or leading individual deals, which sit with the managing partners and investment team.

His long tenure inside the ABN AMRO private equity platform is reflected in third-party records that list him with "RBS Participaties BV," a naming artifact from the period when ABN AMRO was owned by the RBS-led consortium; this is the same mid-market PE lineage that became Capital A. Today the firm manages a large mid-market portfolio across the Benelux and Germany, and Brunia's finance and operations function underpins its fund management and reporting infrastructure.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Where the firm invests: Established, growing mid-market companies in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany — not startups. Capital A backs "entrepreneurs who are looking to expand their company organically or through buy & build."
  • Stake and structure: Large minority or small majority stakes, always investing "alongside management" as a partner rather than a passive owner.
  • Growth ambition: Targets companies with the potential to grow to roughly three times their current size, autonomously or acquisitively.
  • Check size: Typically €5–50 million per transaction.
  • Sector lens: Sector-agnostic but with strong exposure to software and IT-services businesses (Microsoft, SAP and cloud partners), tech-enabled services, logistics, healthcare and consumer/D2C brands.
  • Brunia's specific role: As CFO, his focus is the financial engine of the fund — back-office, reporting, and operations — so "what makes him say yes" applies at the firm/fund level rather than as an individual angel thesis.
