Background
William T. Ahlborg Jr. is a Principal Partner of Ahlborg Acquisitions, LLC, a Denver-based angel investment firm formed in the early 2010s by Tom Ahlborg, Bill Ahlborg, and Steve McBride to fund early-stage companies and private equity opportunities. The firm describes itself as a group of “micro funders” investing $200,000 or less and taking a hands-on role with a small number of partner companies.
Before Ahlborg Acquisitions, Ahlborg worked in the First National Bank of Denver Trust Department from 1963 to 1967. From 1967 to 1984, he worked in the construction industry as principal and owner of Graefe, Ahlborg, Sullivan Realestate and Countyline Homes, Inc. He later worked in investment brokerage with A.G. Edwards & Sons from 1985 to 2001.
Since 2001, Ahlborg has managed private portfolios. His LinkedIn profile lists Colorado State University from 1959 to 1963, and the Bullying Recovery Resource Center describes him as a fourth-generation Denver native with a background in investment management, finance, and philanthropy.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Ahlborg Acquisitions invests in early-stage companies where the principals can bring relevant operating or investing experience; the firm says it invests in “only things we know.”
- The firm focuses on software and technology-enabled business services, energy, and high-tech chemical/biotech manufacturing.
- The firm’s target stage is post-pilot/beta: companies should already have an existing product or service and a developing management team.
- Ahlborg Acquisitions typically invests $200,000 or less per investment.
- The firm emphasizes a hands-on model: it says it can help with board management, financial planning, strategy, strategic focus, financial management, and exit planning.
- Geography matters: the firm says it typically invests in companies within a 2- to 3-hour drive of its Denver office, reflecting its preference for local engagement and Denver-area networks.
- The firm intentionally limits portfolio breadth, saying it aims for “a select group of no more than ten” investments so the principals can stay actively involved.
