Background
William F. "Bill" Doyle is a career medical-device investor and operator. In 2002 he co-founded WFD Ventures LLC, a New York–based private venture capital firm that provides financing and business-building expertise to medical device companies, where he serves as managing director. WFD's mandate spans the full company-building lifecycle — prototype development, IP and licensing strategy, clinical trials, regulatory filings, and commercialization.
Before founding WFD Ventures, Doyle spent much of his career at Johnson & Johnson, where he was a member of the Medical Devices and Diagnostics Group Operating Committee and Vice President of Licensing and Acquisitions. At J&J he also chaired the Medical Devices Research and Development Council, served as worldwide president of Biosense-Webster, Inc., and sat on the boards of Cordis Corporation and Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation. Earlier, he was a management consultant in the healthcare group of McKinsey & Company.
Doyle is best known publicly for his long association with Novocure, the oncology company behind Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) therapy. He has served on Novocure's board since 2004, as Chairman of the Board since 2009, and as Executive Chairman since 2016. WFD Ventures backed Novocure early, funding pilot and pivotal clinical trials in glioblastoma and non-small cell lung cancer. His 2011 TEDMED/TED talk, "Treating cancer with electric fields," helped popularize the TTFields concept.
He holds an S.B. in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He remains active in both institutions — serving on Harvard Business School's Board of Dean's Advisors and MIT's Institute for Medical Engineering & Science Visiting Committee — and established the MIT FIRST Scholarship for robotics-competition participants attending MIT. He also sits on the governing board of the Pershing Square Sohn Cancer Research Alliance.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in medical device and healthcare-technology companies with the potential to make a "major impact on patient care" — the stated mandate of WFD Ventures.
- Stage-agnostic within medtech: WFD has backed companies from early prototype stages through pivotal clinical trials and commercialization; it committed roughly $25M across three rounds to Novocure to fund glioblastoma and NSCLC trials.
- Hands-on, operator-led model: beyond capital, the firm helps with prototype development, IP/licensing strategy, clinical trial design, regulatory filings, and distribution/sales — reflecting Doyle's J&J and McKinsey operating background.
- Conviction on breakthrough modalities: his signature bet, Novocure's Tumor Treating Fields, was a novel, unproven therapeutic modality — indicating a willingness to back long-horizon, science-heavy platforms in oncology and therapeutic devices.
