Background
William H. Frist, M.D. is a physician, former U.S. Senate Majority Leader, and healthcare investor. He graduated from Princeton University in 1974 and earned his M.D. with honors from Harvard Medical School in 1978. He trained in surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Stanford University Medical Center and became a heart and lung transplant surgeon.
Before entering politics, Frist joined Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he founded the Vanderbilt Multi-Organ Transplant Center and performed more than 150 heart and lung transplant procedures. Vanderbilt sources describe him as a founding director of the transplant center, and the FCV team page credits him with founding the center before his Senate career.
Frist represented Tennessee in the U.S. Senate for two terms and served as Senate Majority Leader from 2003 until his retirement in 2007. His Senate work included the 2003 Medicare Modernization Act and PEPFAR. After leaving the Senate, he joined Cressey & Company as a Special Partner in 2008, advising on healthcare industry, policy, regulatory trends, and clinical quality across investment partnerships.
In 2016, Frist co-founded Frist Cressey Ventures with Bryan Cressey. At FCV, he serves on the Investment Committee and is responsible for acquisitions, divestitures, and bringing healthcare policy, clinical, and industry perspective to portfolio partnerships. FCV announced a $425 million oversubscribed Fund IV in February 2026, bringing firm AUM to nearly $1 billion.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- FCV’s stated mission is to “transform healthcare and improve lives,” with a focus on companies improving quality of care, system integration, patient outcomes, affordability, and access.
- The firm invests in early-stage healthcare companies building technology and tech-enabled services, including AI-native business models.
- Frist has described FCV’s scope as healthcare services rather than therapeutics or medical devices: “We don’t do molecules, we don’t do devices.”
- FCV emphasizes value-based delivery and transformational AI technologies; its 2026 Fund IV announcement cited 44 total investments and 14 successful exits.
- The firm looks for founders serious about transforming healthcare and evaluates leadership during diligence, including whether CEOs can motivate teams, make difficult decisions, and lead through startup uncertainty.
- FCV’s model includes strategic LP relationships with organizations such as The Cigna Group, MedStar Health, and OhioHealth, which the firm says collectively touch more than 50% of the U.S. population.
