Background

Bill Ogden is a Managing Partner at Union Capital Associates, LP, a private equity firm originally founded in 1968 that invests in small and mid-sized, founder-led and family-owned U.S. businesses. He joined Union Capital in 2005 to lead its investment program and today is responsible for the firm's overall strategy and investment process — including sourcing, due diligence, structuring, investment management, and exits. Union Capital is run by its Managing Partners — Bill Ogden, Jay Landauer, and Reis Alfond.

Before Union Capital, Ogden led Prudential Financial's U.S. Direct Private Equity Group (approximately 1999–2001) and was a partner at a New York merchant bank (reported as Granite Capital Partners, LLC). He began his career as a U.S. Navy officer, training as a carrier-based Naval Aviator — an experience he credits for his emphasis on talent development and process discipline. He brings more than two decades of private equity experience to the role.

Ogden holds an A.B. from Dartmouth College and an MBA in Finance from the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business (1990–1992). He is based in the Greenwich, Connecticut area.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in established, cash-flowing founder-led and family-owned companies, typically with ~$20M–$200M in revenue — not early-stage startups.
  • Sector concentration in food manufacturing/processing, niche manufacturing, business services / BPO, group purchasing organizations, staffing, restaurants, and marketing services.
  • Operationally driven approach: the firm pairs portfolio companies with seasoned operating executives, emphasizing "an emphasis on people and processes, not financial engineering."
  • Partnership-oriented philosophy built on "mutual respect, integrity, and trust," positioning the firm as a long-term partner to founders.
  • In Ogden's own words on Fund IV: *"The speed of this fundraise reflects confidence in our team, our approach, and our ability to partner with founder-owned businesses as they pursue their next stage of growth."*
