Background
Bill Penkwitz is a Milwaukee-area investment banker with more than 25 years of experience advising middle-market and family-owned businesses on mergers, acquisitions, recapitalizations, and capital-raising. He earned both a Master's Degree in Accounting and a Bachelor's Degree in Finance from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, passed the CPA examination, and completed post-graduate studies in corporate finance and real estate. Early in his career he spent several years with U.S. Bank Capital Markets, where he personally arranged over $200 million in structured finance transactions, and later served as a Managing Director with L. William Teweles & Co., a Milwaukee-based investment banking firm.
Around 2003–2004 he co-founded Promontory Point Capital, a boutique investment bank in downtown Milwaukee, where he was a Partner for roughly two decades. There he led or co-led close to 100–200 client engagements involving full liquidations, majority recapitalizations, minority recaps, ESOPs, management buyouts (MBOs), debt refinancings, and equity placements for privately-held companies. The firm completed dozens of M&A and financing transactions before winding down new client engagements; its partners then moved on to new ventures (Christopher Riegg launched Promontory Strategy Group).
In 2025, Penkwitz co-founded Vantage Investment Banking, based in Mequon, Wisconsin, where he serves as Partner & Co-Founder alongside Mike Burmesch (Partner & Co-Founder), Alex Penkwitz (Vice President & Co-Founder), and analyst Eli Buczek. Vantage offers strategic and financial advisory to middle-market companies — sell-side M&A, acquisitions, debt placement, and capital raising. Beyond his advisory roles, Penkwitz has served on the boards of several Wisconsin-based organizations and is a personal shareholder in a number of privately-held businesses, which is the basis for his "angel investor" classification.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Primary professional focus is middle-market M&A and capital advisory, not venture-style seed investing — he advises owners on sales, ownership transitions, liquidity events, recapitalizations, and growth/acquisition financing.
- Works with privately-held and family-owned businesses, typically established companies with revenue and cash flow rather than pre-revenue startups.
- Sector-agnostic, with hands-on experience across manufacturing/industrials, dental and healthcare services, data/technology, consumer products, and specialty niches.
- Geographically concentrated in the Midwest, especially Wisconsin and the broader Upper Midwest where his network and deal flow are strongest.
- Personal/angel exposure comes through being a direct shareholder in closely-held private businesses, consistent with an operator-banker who backs companies he knows rather than running a structured seed fund.
- His firms emphasize relationship-driven, trust-based dealmaking — Vantage's tagline is "Built on Trust. Defined by Results."
