Background

Xubo Chu is a Managing Director of New China Capital Management, the manager of The Cathay Funds — a family of China-focused growth-capital funds that has been investing since 1992. He rejoined the firm in 2013, having previously served in a senior management role there from 2005 to 2011. Chu has roughly two decades of investment-management experience in China and is primarily responsible for the sourcing, evaluation and supervision of portfolio companies. He sits on the firm's Investment Committee, serves as chief representative of the Beijing office, and handles the firm's government relations.

Before returning to the Cathay platform, Chu was a Managing Director of SEEC Investment Management, which assisted the Cathay Investment Fund in its early years. His long tenure spanning the firm's earlier vintages gives him direct experience across multiple Cathay fund cycles and their exits.

Chu earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Peking University. He speaks English and Mandarin and is based in Beijing.

The Cathay Funds platform he helps run is led by Chairman & CEO Paul S. Wolansky and includes Managing Directors Ling Liu (also COO), Yuan Liu, and J. David Selvia. The firm has invested US$755 million across five funds and reports a cumulative transaction value of over US$5 billion from more than 40 investments, IPOs, and trade sales.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Strategy: "Cathay typically originates and acts as either the sole or the lead equity investor, providing growth capital to fast-growing private companies" in China (firm's own description).
  • Stage: Growth / expansion / pre-IPO equity — not seed or angel, despite the stub label.
  • Sectors: Consumer goods & services, TMT (technology, media, telecom), distribution & logistics, healthcare, and manufacturing.
  • Value-add angle: The firm positions itself as a provider of operational and capital-market expertise, preparing portfolio companies for onshore and offshore IPOs or trade sales; Cathay IPOs have been led by underwriters including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, BofA Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse, and JP Morgan.
  • What makes them engage: Fast-growing private Chinese companies where Cathay can take a lead/sole equity position and drive toward a defined capital event (IPO or sale).
