Background
Yao Bo (Jason Yao) is a career actuary and financial executive who spent more than two decades at Ping An, one of China's largest integrated financial groups. He joined Ping An in 2001 after working at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu as a consulting actuary and senior manager. At Ping An he was appointed Chief Actuary in 2007 and Chief Financial Officer in 2008, and subsequently served as Executive Deputy President / Executive Vice President and Executive Director.
As CFO from 2008 onward, Yao took comprehensive responsibility for the group's strategy execution, corporate and financial planning, capital and liquidity risk management, and actuarial and treasury functions. He chaired or oversaw internal bodies including the Budget Management Committee, the Product Committee, and the Strategy Development Center.
On 1 July 2020, as founder Peter Ma Mingzhe stepped back from day-to-day management (remaining Chairman), Yao Bo was elevated to Co-Chief Executive Officer of Ping An, part of a co-CEO leadership structure. He was roughly 49 years old at that appointment (born c. 1970–1971). On 26 April 2023 he resigned as Co-CEO, citing personal and family reasons, and was re-designated from Executive Director to Non-Executive Director of the company.
Yao holds an MBA from New York University's Stern School and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA). In June 2025 he was (re-)appointed an Independent Non-Executive Director of Clover Aviation Capital, effective 1 July 2025, where his financial-sector leadership is positioned to strengthen the company's governance and growth.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- No public record supports characterizing Yao as an angel/seed investor with a personal check size or thesis. His documented remit has been corporate capital allocation and strategy at group scale, not early-stage venture.
- At Ping An his focus areas were strategy planning, capital and liquidity management, actuarial pricing/product oversight, and performance evaluation across the group's insurance, banking, and technology arms.
- His current board roles emphasize governance, financial discipline, and long-term growth — e.g., at Clover Aviation Capital he is cited for "strategic insight and industry experience" strengthening the governance framework.
Notable Investments
- No verifiable personal angel/venture portfolio exists in public sources. As a Ping An executive he helped steer group-level capital deployment across Ping An's insurance, banking (Ping An Bank), asset-management, and technology subsidiaries (e.g., Lufax, OneConnect, Ping An Good Doctor), but these are corporate holdings, not personal investments and cannot be attributed to him individually.
