Background
Yasushi Komori is a General Partner at GFR Fund, a San Francisco-based, globally-oriented venture capital firm backing founders in consumer technology, gaming, and entertainment. GFR is backed by strategic investors from Asia and is affiliated with GREE, the Tokyo-based mobile gaming company (the fund is managed by GREE VR Capital). He invests alongside fellow General Partners Teppei Tsutsui and Patrick Montague.
Before venture capital, Komori spent roughly six to seven years in the gaming industry with both a product and technical background. He worked at GREE as a Senior Product Manager, where he drove revenue of more than $50M per year and oversaw P&L for mobile titles generating $1M+ in monthly revenue. Earlier in his career he worked as a server-side software developer, and his skill set spans server-side programming, MySQL/LAMP, social game development, game design, and project management. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Waseda University (2003–2007).
As a dual U.S.–Japan citizen, Komori leans on his cross-border perspective to source opportunities in gaming infrastructure, developer tools, and creator technology, and to connect founders across the Japan–U.S. corridor. In his own words about what shapes his lens as an investor: "Over the years, I've gained a deep understanding of product and technology development... That's what I look for as a General Partner at GFR."
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests at Pre-Seed, Seed, and Series A, writing checks of roughly $100K–$5M (sweet spot around $1.5M); GFR does not typically lead.
- Gaming infrastructure over studios: prefers backing tools and platforms that support indie developers rather than the game studios themselves.
- Community-led growth: treats community metrics (e.g., Discord size and engagement) as key evaluation signals for consumer/entertainment companies.
- Creator economy: interested in the intersection of creators and community, where technology fuels expansion.
- Generative AI: tracks creative/consumer AI applications, including how accelerators like Y Combinator deploy AI companies.
- Cross-border angle: open to founders with a Japan–U.S. business element, leveraging GFR's GREE/Asia backing.
- Product-and-technology depth is his personal filter: "I've gained a deep understanding of product and technology development... That's what I look for as a General Partner at GFR."
