Background

Yeshun Dong is a Managing Partner and one of three co-founders of Volcanics Venture (火山石投资), a Shanghai-based venture capital firm he established in May 2016 alongside Suyang Zhang (章苏阳) and Ying Wu (吴颖). The three founders previously worked together as fund partners and collectively bring more than 60 years of combined venture investing and corporate-management experience. Volcanics invests across early and growth stages with a focus on internet/intelligent innovation, semiconductors, and healthcare, and had backed roughly 81 companies as of December 2022.

Dong's career is unusually operator-heavy for a VC. Before investing, he spent more than two decades in the automotive and semiconductor industries, holding senior management roles including General Manager of United Automotive Electronic Systems Co. (联合汽车电子), General Manager of Zhonglian Automotive Electronics (中联汽车电子) and Shanghai MEZIER/申雅 Rubber Sealing Systems, and Party Secretary at Yanfeng Visteon (延锋伟世通). On the investment and chairman side he served as Vice General Manager of Shanghai Alliance Investment (上海联和投资), and as Chairman/CEO of Shanghai Grace (Hongli) Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (宏力半导体), Shanghai Lianchuang Venture Investment (上海联创), MSN China, and Nantong Lianya Pharmaceutical (南通联亚药业).

In 2011 he joined IDG Capital as a Partner, where he focused on cleantech / new energy investing. Volcanics Venture is part of the well-documented "IDG diaspora," a wave of senior IDG investors who left to start their own firms. His blend of deep industrial operating experience (autos, semiconductors) and institutional VC at IDG underpins Volcanics' emphasis on hard-tech and healthcare.

Dong holds an EMBA from the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) and a bachelor's degree in Mechanical (and Electrical) Engineering from the Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Engineering (上海机械学院, now University of Shanghai for Science and Technology).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Personally focuses on cross-border / "borderless" innovation technology and healthcare investing, drawing on his semiconductor and automotive-electronics operating background.
  • Invests through Volcanics' dual-currency (USD/RMB) platform across Seed, Series A, and Series B rounds; firm data show roughly 27 Series A deals (avg. ~$8.3M), 15 Series B deals (avg. ~$26.8M), and ~10 Seed-stage investments.
  • Core firm sectors: Internet/intelligent innovation, semiconductors & hard tech, enterprise/AI software, and healthcare / life sciences.
  • As a former operator and chairman of semiconductor and pharma companies, he is positioned to favor founders with strong technical depth and clear paths to industrialization rather than purely consumer plays.
