Background

Yuquan Wang is a Founding Partner of Haiyin Capital, a China-based venture firm he founded in 2008 that invests in overseas (primarily US) high-technology companies. He is one of the most recognized public voices on global technology trends in the Chinese-speaking world, known for his theories of "modular / building-block innovation" (积木式创新) and his concept of spotting "dark trends" in emerging technology. He also serves as Chairman of Innovation Map Inc., a Haiyin subsidiary he established in 2016 to bridge US innovation with Chinese capital and markets.

Before turning to investing, Wang built a career in strategy consulting and marketing. In 1994–1995 he founded Consultech (康斯泰克), a firm later acquired by the marketing-communications group Omnicom in 2007. In 1998 he established Frost & Sullivan's China business and served as President of its China region, where he advised major Chinese enterprises — notably helping China Mobile in its rise to become, by market capitalization, one of the largest mobile telecom operators in the world. He remained affiliated with Frost & Sullivan as a chief consultant.

Around 2010, Wang shifted his primary focus fully to investing, concentrating Haiyin's strategy on early-stage US deep-tech companies with the thesis that China could be the manufacturing, scaling, and market partner for cutting-edge American innovation. He is also a prolific educator and author: his paid audio program on global innovation (often cited as "260 Lectures on Global Innovation") has reported more than 100,000 paying subscribers, and he has authored several books on innovation strategy and technological transformation.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • "Building-block / modular innovation" (积木式创新): Wang argues the future of innovation is assembled from specialized parts — startups own breakthrough core technology, while partners (often in China) supply manufacturing, capital, and market. He invests where a small team owns a genuinely novel, hard-tech advantage.
  • Deep tech and frontier hardware: Focus areas include AI, robotics, aerospace, new energy, advanced sensors/electronics, and technology-enabled healthcare.
  • Cross-border, "de-Silicon-Valley-ized" sourcing: In interviews he has argued that Chinese investors going overseas need to move beyond only chasing Silicon Valley, seeking breakthrough science and hardware from top research universities and labs across the US.
  • Early stage: Positioned as a seed/angel and early-stage investor, backing companies at the point where core technology is proven but scaling and commercialization lie ahead.

Notable Investments

  • WiTricity — wireless (resonant) power/charging technology.
  • Soft Robotics — soft, adaptive robotic grippers for advanced manufacturing and automation.
  • Hanson Robotics — humanoid / emotional robotics (creator of "Sophia").
  • 1366 Technologies — low-cost silicon solar-wafer manufacturing to reduce the cost of solar power (Wang participated in later financing rounds such as its Series C extension).
  • MC10 — flexible "electronic skin" / stretchable biometric sensors.
