Background
Zachary White is a Venture Partner on 8VC’s investment team. 8VC says he focuses on sourcing investment opportunities, building the firm’s platform through content, events, and community, working with the 8VC Build company-creation program, and helping lead the firm’s defense investment strategy.
Before 8VC, White spent four years helping run Sinai Ventures, which 8VC describes as a $100 million stage- and sector-agnostic fund. In a 2021 LA Venture podcast interview, White said he and Jordan Fudge launched Sinai Ventures in 2017 after working with a Los Angeles family office, raised a $100 million first fund from that single family office, and made 85 investments from that fund.
White studied economics at New York University. In the LA Venture interview, he described being originally from New Zealand, moving to Los Angeles at a young age, attending NYU on the East Coast, and later returning to Los Angeles. He said early exposure to Spotify’s Los Angeles operation led him into investing for a Southeast Asian family office, first around companies related to Spotify and later across a broader set of technology opportunities.
At Sinai, White said he looked after the venture portfolio and managed its day-to-day investment work. Sinai Capital Partners later announced more than $600 million in new capital across Sinai Ventures and New Slate Ventures, with Sinai Ventures targeting growth-stage and pre-IPO software, internet, and technology-enabled companies.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- At 8VC, White’s current stated focus includes sourcing new investments, supporting 8VC Build companies, and helping lead defense investing, specifically companies addressing critical national-security challenges.
- 8VC’s broader thesis is “Smart Enterprise”: using data integration, expert workflows, platforms, and network effects to transform large industries. The firm lists logistics, life sciences, healthcare, IT infrastructure, and government/defense as thesis areas.
- In Sinai’s 2020 announcement, White stated: “the power of technology is the key to creating a more prosperous future,” and said Sinai was dedicated to founders with large ideas making meaningful changes in communities.
- In his 2021 LA Venture interview, White said Sinai was opportunistic on structure and stage, including primary rounds and secondary purchases, and that its larger fund could write $10 million to $25 million checks.
- White emphasized clear use of capital over current revenue alone: he said he cared less about whether a company had $3 million in revenue than whether the capital could credibly help it reach $30 million to $50 million.
- He described Sinai’s strongest historical areas as consumer technology, healthcare, and B2B enterprise, while also noting an interest in reducing bias around what counts as an investable founder or company.
