Background
Zaid Ashai is best known today as the Chairman and CEO of Nexamp, a national clean-energy company headquartered in Boston and Chicago that develops, builds, owns and operates community and utility-scale solar and battery-storage projects. He came to the operating role from the investment side: he originally oversaw Nexamp as a General Partner at Boston venture firm Point Judith Capital (now PJC) before joining the company's management team, and he remains associated with PJC as a Venture Partner focused on energy and energy-efficiency investments.
His investing career began on Wall Street, where he worked as an investment banking analyst in Credit Suisse's Technology Group, followed by a stint at private-equity/fund-of-funds firm HarbourVest Partners. He then joined Good Energies, a cleantech-focused investor, where he concentrated on next-generation energy-efficiency and clean-energy companies — a portfolio that included Nexamp, 3TIER, Emergence BioEnergy, EverPower and Kalpan (India). During his time at Good Energies he was elected a Kauffman Fellow.
Ashai holds an AB in International Relations and Economics, with honors and Phi Beta Kappa, from Brown University (1999), and earned both an MBA from Harvard Business School and an MPA from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, where he was named a Zuckerman Fellow. His interest in climate and clean energy dates back to his undergraduate years.
Beyond his firm roles, Ashai is active in the clean-energy policy and industry community. He serves as board chair of Vote Solar and has sat on the boards of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and NECEC (the Northeast Clean Energy Council). He has also served as a judge and mentor for the New England Cleantech Open and as a guest faculty member at the Pennsylvania Bar Institute's power-law programming.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests at the seed and early stage through PJC, a Boston-based firm founded in 2001 that manages roughly $100M across its funds.
- Check sizes at PJC are generally $500K–$3M for a first round, with reserves set aside for follow-on financings.
- PJC's broad mandate spans enterprise software, consumer, AI, healthcare, SaaS and e-commerce; Ashai's individual lens is energy, cleantech and energy efficiency, reflecting the domain expertise he built at Good Energies and Nexamp.
- Backs companies based in the U.S. and Canada.
- His track record shows a preference for capital-intensive, mission-driven clean-energy businesses where operational and policy expertise — not just capital — drive the outcome; he is himself the example, having moved from investor to operator at Nexamp.
