Background

Ziad Henry Moukheiber is a Boston-based entrepreneur turned angel investor who has led Boston Harbor Angels (BHA) as President and CEO since March 2016. He earned his degree from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University before spending nearly two decades in the technology-services industry. In 1998 he founded Silversword LLC, an IT services and consulting company serving small and medium-sized businesses across New England, which he built into a leading regional provider before it was acquired by NSK Inc. in 2015.

After exiting Silversword, Moukheiber turned his focus to early-stage investing. He co-founded Boston Harbor Angels (alongside longtime member Mic Williams), launched Beacon Hill Ventures as an early-stage investing and consulting vehicle, and co-founded the EQX Fund LLC with Jason Kraus, an angel/early-stage fund concentrated on Life Sciences and IT. Founded in 2004, Boston Harbor Angels celebrated its 20th anniversary in March 2024 and describes itself as one of the top angel groups in the U.S., backing companies across life sciences, IT, consumer and business products, specialty materials, and aviation.

Beyond investing, Moukheiber is an active mentor and community figure. He is a mentor with BUILD and BUILDboston, a nonprofit that uses entrepreneurship to help at-risk students, and he has hosted podcasts and shows including the "Never a Dull Moment Show" (launched December 2022) and "FAILURE – The Podcast" (co-hosted with David Powsner). Notably, Moukheiber is legally blind — living with a macular-degeneration-like condition — and relies on assistive technology in his work, a fact he has spoken about publicly in interviews.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in high-growth, early-stage companies, typically those raising $250K–$1.5M, funding part of the round and syndicating the rest with other angel groups and early-stage VCs.
  • Looks for capital-efficient businesses that can reach profitability on less than ~$5M of equity and deliver at least a 10x return within about 5 years.
  • Wants companies close to commercialization with a clear and defensible competitive advantage.
  • Sector interests span life sciences/medical devices and IT, with stated enthusiasm for health tech, green technologies, and educational technology as "very hot" areas (2024).
  • Values founders who are "open to taking advice, yet have the smarts and determination to make their company successful" — Moukheiber repeatedly emphasizes persistence in the face of challenges and learning from failure as key predictors of entrepreneurial success.
  • Actively champions women- and minority-led startups, "recognizing the unique perspectives and opportunities they bring."
  • Emphasizes that BHA "contributes more than money," providing mentorship, networking, and hands-on support to portfolio companies.
