Background

Zindel Zelmanovitch is the founder and CEO of Founders' Impact Inc., the New York–based investment firm formerly known as East Coast Capital Holdings, Ltd. He launched the firm in 1986, when it was licensed by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) as a Specialized Small Business Investment Company (SSBIC) — a designation created to channel loans and equity into small businesses owned by individuals who qualify as socially or economically disadvantaged. Across four decades he has run the firm as an evergreen vehicle, recycling returns rather than operating on a fixed fund cycle.

Under Zelmanovitch's leadership the firm built a strategy centered on Minority Depository Institutions (MDIs). In November 2014, East Coast Capital Holdings acquired a minority common-stock interest in Harbor Bankshares Corporation, parent of The Harbor Bank of Maryland — a Baltimore-based, Treasury-certified CDFI and former TARP recipient. At the time Zelmanovitch framed the deal as "a natural progression in our strategy to invest in first-class minority financial institutions." The firm's bank portfolio also grew to include Industrial Bank in Washington, D.C., and NewBank in New York.

In recent years Zelmanovitch rebranded the firm as Founders' Impact, repositioning it in the ESG/impact-investing space while keeping the SSBIC mandate. He has described the firm's portfolio and structure as "unique in the ESG space," emphasizing a dual mandate of financial and social return and a hands-on model in which the firm acts as a co-founder of FinTech and InsurTech companies it incubates (Lending Qube, Qwale, CapStream, Aluta, and Timothy). He also chairs the board of trustees of Founders' Impact New Enterprise, Inc. (FINE), the firm's 501(c)(3) nonprofit affiliate focused on underserved entrepreneurs and neighborhoods.

He works alongside a small family/management team that has included Yitzhak Zelmanovitch (President / COO). Detailed public information about his pre-1986 career and formal education is not available in primary sources.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Mission-driven, dual-return mandate: "We are an evergreen fund that provides early stage capital and works side-by-side with portfolio companies as co-founders to achieve both financial and social return on investments."
  • Sector concentration: Banking (especially MDIs), FinTech, and InsurTech — "committed to diversifying access to capital and focused on underserved areas."
  • SSBIC eligibility filter: Targets small businesses at least 50% owned/controlled by socially or economically disadvantaged individuals, per the firm's SBA license.
  • Co-founder / operator model: Rather than passive checks, the firm co-founds and incubates fintech/insurtech ventures and provides operational subject-matter expertise to portfolio companies.
  • Bank-stake strategy: Acquires minority equity positions in minority depository institutions, with a stated preference for "first-class minority financial institutions," including former TARP recipients.
  • Evergreen structure: Capital is recycled rather than raised and returned on a fixed fund timeline, supporting long-hold positions in regulated banks.
