Background

Zvi Alon is Chairman and CEO of Tigo Energy, Inc. He has served as Tigo’s Chairman since May 2013 and CEO since December 2013, after first entering the company as an investor and board chair. Tigo develops smart hardware and software for solar systems, including module-level power electronics, monitoring, rapid shutdown, inverters, and battery storage.

Before Tigo, Alon was Chairman, CEO, and President of NetManage, Inc. from 1990 until its acquisition in 2008. Tigo’s own biography says he founded several companies, including NetManage in the U.S. and NetVision in Israel, both of which reached public markets. He is also Chairman of Business Intelligence Associates, Inc., described by Tigo as a private computer forensics and eDiscovery technology company.

Alon received an electrical engineering degree from Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in 1979, according to the Alon Family Foundation site and his LinkedIn profile. He is founder and Chairman of the California Israel Chamber of Commerce, a role he has held since 1995, and co-founder of California Israel Angels, whose investment focus is opportunities combining activity in California and Israel.

Alon Ventures is described by Tigo as a private investment entity established in 2006, based in Silicon Valley, and dedicated to long-term investments. It is active in high tech, clean tech, and real estate investments in the U.S., Israel, and China.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Alon Ventures invests selectively in “high-quality companies with the potential to deliver excellent long-term returns,” with activity in high tech, clean tech, and real estate.
  • Through California Israel Angels, Alon’s stated investment focus is opportunities combining California and Israel activity.
  • In a 2023 Globes interview, Alon said he had stopped making early-stage startup investments roughly 12-13 years earlier because they required too much work; he described current investing as very selective and not limited to technology.
  • He appears to prefer situations where capital is paired with operating involvement. On Tigo, he said: “Tigo, from my perspective, is my last investment that requires assistance and not just money.”
  • His clean-energy operating thesis emphasizes measurable performance, ROI, transparency, reliability, and accountability rather than dependence on subsidies or sentiment.
  • He has shown willingness to invest in overlooked or difficult situations when he believes there is differentiated know-how and an opportunity to stabilize the company.

Notable Investments

  • Tigo Energy - Solar MLPE, monitoring, rapid-shutdown, inverter, and storage company. Alon led a financing round after diligence, personally signed a $5 million-$5.5 million check, became Chairman in 2013, became CEO in 2013, and led the company through a 2023 Nasdaq listing via SPAC merger.
  • Business Intelligence Associates, Inc. - Computer forensics and eDiscovery technology company; Alon has served as Chairman since 2014. A 2023 Globes interview references a successful exit in a company engaged in AI-like textual search for forensic purposes, but the article does not explicitly name the company.
  • California Israel Angels deal: Octago - In a 2001 Globes article, Alon cited Octago, an automated workforce-hiring company, as one of California Israel Angels’ recent investments; he said customer usage and paid adoption were early criteria before investment.
  • Unnamed mall-furniture company - In the 2023 Globes interview, Alon cited an investment in a company making furniture for malls, where his group helped stabilize the business and achieved a successful exit.
  • Real estate investments - Alon has repeatedly described real estate as part of his investment activity, though specific deals are not publicly named in the sources reviewed.
